Shave & a Diptych, Two Bits

Born in NYC on December 9th, 1974, I have been painting in oils for over twenty years. In 1998, my senior year at SVA, I was smooshed by a taxi and lost the use of my painting hand. Although I muddled through to finish my BFA in 2000 and dabbled a bit afterwards, I had given up hope of making a proper "go" at the art-world. But I couldn't change my spots and in 2006, as a senior MA candidate in Arts Administration at Teachers College, I took "introduction to painting" as a coast-class while I finished my thesis. I haven't left the studio since.

Cathartic and drenched in toungue-in-cheek symbolism, my work makes use of fluidity, energy, juxtaposition, transparency, control and color to address contradiction, tension, obscurity, harmony, renewal, and balance.

My style draws on the lusciousness and precision of several decorative genre: the Weiner Werkstatte, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, the Japanese aesthetic; the artists: Klimt, O'keeffe, Still, Matisse, Erte, Blossfeldt, Hokusai, Gaudi, De Lempicka; and later: Morris Louis's Veils and Pat Steir.

PETRA - THE RED ROSE CITY

I was very fortunate to have traveled extensively from an early age. My father was an accomplished musician and music producer. His work required traveling overseas and our family always accompanied him. I was born in Israel and lived in the Far East before settling in New York in 1988 at the age of 13. Due to my father's work, I grew up surrounded by artists, musicians and writers. My mom was also an avid photographer and potter. The creative process always fascinated me, and I feel that I have inherited my parent's energy and enthusiasm for creating art, which I express through photography. I came to photography just a few years ago. It was while my wife and I were sitting at our favorite restaurant admiring the photographs hanging on the walls. The portraits of family moments, friends, travels, and everyday life captivated me. I started thinking about how thrilling it would be to be able to take photographs that captured our lives together and to be able to hang them in our home allowing us to relive and enjoy the moments and memories. I went out and bought a Canon digital camera, and started taking pictures. Over the past few years my wife and I have traveled to some amazing destinations, camera in hand, and now I would like to share those memories with you. I hope you enjoy viewing these photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them!

PHOTOGRAPHS OF A PARTICULAR NATURE

In 1987 Matthew Aarvold moved from the Midwest to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and since 1993, has been employed by the Wildlife Conservation Society.                  As Assistant Supervisor of Exhibit Production, he works at all five New York parks, but mainly at the Bronx Zoo.  Working with architects, designers, and animal care specialists, the exhibit shop fabricates and maintains habitats that are safe and interesting for the animals, easily maintainable, and will edify the public.  In his off hours he loves the solitude of back packing the focus and commitment of rock climbing and spends way too much time at the pub "perfecting his game of 8-ball.

Sporting a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, both in sculpture, Matthew's work is now primarily photographic, enjoying the nuances of space and time not available through sculpture.

The leaf photographs were taken in Yosemite Valley last October.  They are part of an ongoing series beginning in 2004.  They reflect life, death and celebrate moments where the two coexist in beauty.  The photographs are taken on walks in the forest.  Because of the many variables involved, (wind, cloud, etc.), less than 1% are ever make it to print.

Attempting to take more control of the image making process he returned to the studio.  Fade is the first from this new series.  The photos are self conscious and contrived.  They purpose the exploration of minutia' and interaction.  They will never be about Joseph Cornell, but do bow in his general direction.

Matt would never intentionally deface nature.  His tags on rocks are water based and a good rain will make them fade away.  He considers the rock pieces a product of an alter ego screaming his name and accomplishment, but they are often not all they seem to be.  He believes in full frame photographs with minimal or no manipulation.  What you see is what was there.  Enjoy.

MICHAEL HARWOOD - Along for the Ride

Known for his black-and-white photographs of body-builders posed atop the kitchen counters in his Chelsea apartment, Michael Harwood is pleased to present at Barber Bart images from the colorful out of doors - a sweet suite, in counterpoint to the Big (gray) Apple.
Mr. Harwood is fortunate to have a partner, the formidably talented musician, James Followell, whose work sometimes takes him out of town - sometimes way out of town. And Michael occasionally finds himself, with camera, "along for the ride". Hence the title of this show: these photos all were taken while on the road with James.
A native New Yorker, Mr. Harwood has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years. Venues for shows in the city have included the National Arts Club, ClampArt, the Leslie/Lohman Gallery, Art@Large, Art Resources Transfer, Emulsion, and Tom of Finland Clothing. Out of town his work has been displayed at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, galleries at Syracuse University and Sarah Lawrence College.
His photographs have been published in Self-Exposure (Universe/Rizzoli), Treasures from the Leslie/Lohman Foundation (All Saints Press), and The James White Review. His work can also be found in numerous private colletions.

Michael Alago has worked in the music industry for nearly two decades as producer and talent scout. Known and respected by most of the major labels for his expertise in a variety of musical genres, Alago discovered Metallica and worked with a diverse group of artists that includes Michael Feinstein, Johnny Rotten, White Zombie and Nina Simone. "Working with the incomparable Nina was my finest hour," says Michael, speaking of their work together on the critically acclaimed album "A Single Woman," the singer's last recording. Alago left the music business in the summer of 2002 to concentrate on another life-long passion a photography. Working initially with a Polaroid camera, Michael began a series of stark male portraits that is still ongoing. Many of the images on this site are reproduced from the Polaroid's from this early period of work. This collection of friends, models and bodybuilders indeed boast the muscularity, tattoos, and attitude that define this particular male subset, but the images also bear Alago's distinctive stamp of irreverent heat. A collection of his work, titled Rough Gods was released in spring 2005. Michael has exhibited in New York Paris,San Francisco,Portland Or, Toronto, Paris, Berlin and currently in Madrid and continues to photograph rough gods wherever he may find them.
